UNPARALLELED QUALITY MADE IN GERMANY

STOE develops, manufactures and sells scientific instruments for the non-destructive analysis of samples. Based on the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, these systems characterize single crystals and powder samples and give answers to which substances a particular powder or crystal contains or at which positions atoms in solid bodies are.
Originally founded in 1887 with the primary objective of manufacturing equipment for the optical examination of crystals, STOE has been at the forefront of powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction since the 1960s. STOE invented and patented the transmission geometry technique for Powder XRD and additionally, developed the first pixel detector XRD system with an open Eulerian cradle for single crystals.
Headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany, STOE keeps the R&D, software programming, electrical and mechanical engineering, and production all in house, allowing to provide customers with standard as well as individual solutions. STOE is committed to delivering uncompromising quality, distinguishing themselves through their meticulous attention to detail. As a result, they have become THE partner in X-Ray Diffraction for crystallographers, chemists, material scientists, and pharmacists worldwide.

Service Concept

To STOE, service is not a buisness or a profit center, it is an obligation. We believe that you should spend your money on your research, not on service technicians.
We stand behind our claims of extraordinary quality and offer the new and unprecedented 10 Year STOE Parts & Labor Guarantee for all STOE parts in our STADI P, STADI MP, IPDS and STADIVARI systems.

Sustainability

Sustainability is at the core of STOE’s philosophy. We design and build STOE instruments as long lasting as possible, so that they run for decades, serving generations of scientists. Parts are accessible and thus easily replaceable if necessary. Moreover, our instruments can be upgraded and extended according to future demands without replacing the whole system. We apply 100% renewable energy when producing your XRD, generated by our own photovoltaic system and being topped up with hydropower. And please forgive us if our packages don’t look shiny – we reuse packaging material and focus on thrilling you with what’s inside!

Made in Germany

German engineering has the well-earned reputation to be among the worlds best. The craftsmanship and quality of STOE’s engineering work combined achieve unparalleled precision and performance.
At STOE R&D, software development, electrical and mechanical engineering and production are all kept in-house. Building a system from the first piece to the final instrument ensures 100% control over quality and precision.
This level of precision is one of the many points that make STOE stand out.

TRADITION OF INNOVATION SINCE 1887

1887

Foundation of STOE
The company was founded by Peter Stoe, who had been a mechanic at the University in Heidelberg. He developed one- and two-circle optical goniometers together with Prof. Dr. V. Goldschmidt.

1896

Going International
From it’s very beginning, STOE was part of the international crystallographic community. STOE produced two-cirlcle goniometers for customers in Europe and globally.

1931

Fritz Reinheimer
Fritz Reinheimer (a nephew of Peter Stoe) continued to run the company in Heidelberg. He remains well rooted in the crystallographic community, as a letter of WL Bragg illustrates: „…such an opportunity [a stay at the institute] is a very rare one, and one which I must take…“

1960

Prof. Dr. Erich Wölfel

Prof. Dr. E. Wölfel joined STOE as a shareholder. The company started to produce X-Ray equipment.

1961

Start of X-Ray Diffractometer Development and Production
All STOE shares were acquired by E. Wölfel who continued to run the company. This was the start of the development and production of X-Ray diffractometer systems.

1968

STADI4

Introduction of the STOE computer controlled 4-Circle Diffractometer System – STADI4.

1970

Reciprocal Lattice Explorer

Prof. Wölfel constructed a new film instrument, the Reciprocal Lattice Explorer, patented by STOE.

1979

Transmission X-Ray Powder Diffraction System

Introduction of the patented STOE Transmission X-Ray Powder Diffraction System.

1992

IPDS

Introduction of the STOE Imaging Plate Diffraction System IPDS.

1995

Death of Prof. Dr. E. Wölfel

Prof. Dr. E. Wölfel dies at the age of 73.

1997

STADI MP

Introduction of the STOE Multi Purpose Diffractometer STADI MP.

2000

IPDS II, IP-PSD and STADI4 CCD

Introduction of the:
– Imaging Plate Diffraction System II (IPDS II)
– Imaging Plate Position Sensitive Detector for Powder Diffraction Systems (IP-PSD)
– Four-Circle CCD Diffractometer STADI4 CCD

2001

STADI P Combi

Introduction of the combinatorial analysis instrument STADI P Combi, offering easy comparison of up to 96 samples.

2004

IPDS 2T

Introduction of the IPDS 2T

2006

Jens Richter became Co-CEO & CTO

In the same year, the vertically mounted STADI MP and the IPDS 2T with Xenocs GeniX BDS were introduced.

2008

IPDS 2T Dual Beam

Introduction of the IPDS 2T with dual beam option.

2009

STADIVARI

Introduction of the STOE open eulerian cradle STADIVARI. Implementation of the DECTRIS solid state pixel detector PILATUS.

2010

DECTRIS MYTHEN 1K

Implementation of the DECTRIS solid state strip detector MYTHEN 1K for the STOE powder diffractometer systems.

2013

Ownership succession solved

Martin Fark became a shareholder and joined the management team, heading the commercial operations, together with Jens Richter who continues to be heading the scientific operations.

2015

STADI P ESSENTIALS

The STADI P ESSENTIALS was introduced as a low cost capillary diffractometer for customers looking for an economic instrument of high quality.

2017

10 year parts and labor guarantee introduced

To stand behind the claim of superior quality of instruments STOE introduces a 10 year parts and labor guarantee. During 10 years time, customers will receive all STOE parts that are part of our systems and all STOE labor time without charge.

2017

Foundation of STOE Corporation

Many North American and Canadian research institutes are now interested in STOE instruments. Therefore the STOE Corporation in Chicago was founded.

2019

Introduction of the STADI P PDF machine

Equipped with a Ag source and a Mythen 4K detector with air scattering shields, the STADI P is THE perfect platform for PDF measurements. To offer this possibility not only to customers who specifically ask for it but to everyone who is interested, STOE introduced the possibility to expand a STADI P instrument to a PDF machine.

    The stoe community

At STOE we want to offer you more than just X-ray diffraction equipment, we want to offer you a lifelong partnership and friendship. This means, we will be there whenever you need us and we have an open ear for your ideas. Just like that, innovations like the PDF machine and the coin cell holder came about. Knowledge is also shared at our traditional yearly user meeting at our headquarters in Darmstadt. This meeting is not only a staple in our long-time users calendar for the interesting talks, workshops and appearing collaboration opportunities, but also for our legendary barbecue where new and old friends get together over delicious food and beer.

We are always open for cooperation and partnerships to develop cutting edge technologies. STOE is an independent and flexible company, therefore we are happy to discuss any ideas early on and to give you valuable feedback.  If you think that you can contribute to the success of STOE, please contact us: info@stoe.com.
